Virginia Hospital Center Chair of Emergency Medicine Honored for Outstanding Leadership

Dr. Michael Silverman Named Medical Director of the Year & Torch Award Recipient for Ethical Leadership

Arlington VA: — Virginia Hospital Center (VHC), a community-based hospital providing medical services to the Washington, DC metropolitan area for 75 years, is pleased to announce Michael Silverman, MD, FACEP, chair of emergency medicine, was recently awarded two incredible honors. Dr. Silverman was selected as one of five 2020 Facility Medical Directors of the Year by Alteon Health, the industry-leading national medical group that has managed VHC’s emergency medicine program since 2001. The Leadership Center for Excellence also selected Dr. Silverman as the 2021 recipient for the Dominion Energy Torch Award for Ethical Leadership.

“Dr. Silverman has always been an exemplary leader and mentor to our emergency department employees, but his performance in the face of the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic was exceptional,” said James Cole, President and CEO of Virginia Hospital Center. “Mike brought incredible vision and foresight to our COVID response team and played a critical role as a public health educator throughout the pandemic, providing the community with clear updates and information to help alleviate fear and direct behavior.”

The Leadership Center for Excellence’s Dominion Energy Torch Award for Ethical leadership celebrates Dr. Silverman for his contributions as a leader within the Arlington and greater medical communities.  Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Silverman served as a reassuring presence, providing straightforward updates through his Facebook page and a Director’s Corner column in Emergency Physicians Monthly. In December, Arlington Magazine recognized Dr. Silverman as "Best of Arlington" for COVID information.

“During the darkest days of the pandemic, Dr. Mike Silverman was like a beacon in the night providing critical information and guidance to keep his community safe. At Dominion Energy our top core values are Safety and Ethics, which Dr. Silverman demonstrates every day through his leadership at Virginia Hospital Center,” said Scott Price, Dominion Energy Regional Policy Director. “We are grateful for his service and delighted to present Dr. Silverman with the Dominion Energy Torch Award for Ethical Leadership,” said Price. Price presented the Torch Award during the Leadership Center for Excellence’s annual Leadership Summit on May 21.

Alteon’s Medical Director of the Year award honors medical directors from across Alteon’s more than 125 clinical sites who exhibited exemplary leadership and professionalism in 2020, mentoring their physicians and advanced practice providers while improving department performance. Throughout 2020, Dr. Silverman played a critical role in VHC’s COVID-19 Task Force and led the physical adaptation of the Emergency Department to safely meet patients’ evolving needs. He also led his physician team in designing and delivering a 12-part lecture series for the department’s physician assistants and nurse practitioners, equipping them to comfortably managing the higher acuity patient population.

"In his 10 years as chair of emergency medicine, Dr. Silverman has demonstrated outstanding leadership and dedication to Alteon, his Emergency Department, Virginia Hospital Center, and the community of Arlington," said Greg Komara, Alteon’s senior vice president of operations for the region.
