Expertise in Laparoscopic Surgery

Virginia Hospital Center Physician Group - Urology has extensive experience in performing a number of laparoscopic procedures.

Benefits of Laparoscopic Surgery
Until quite recently, most traditional urologic surgical procedures required large incisions with lengthy hospitalization and recovery. Now, many urological surgeries can be performed safely and effectively with minimally invasive techniques or laparoscopic surgery. Using a small telescope with built-in magnification, long, thin surgical instruments are placed through 3-5 incisions (each of which is usually no larger than a dime in size) and the surgery is performed in a manner that is similar to how it would be performed through an open incision.
Minimally invasive procedures offer the same diagnostic and therapeutic benefits of traditional open surgery - but also reduced postoperative pain, shorter hospitalization, faster recovery, and better cosmetic results.

At the Forefront of Robotic Surgery

The computer-enhanced da Vinci® Surgical System's robotic technology takes surgery beyond the limits of the human hand, introducing precise, versatile instrument movement combined with a magnified, three-dimensional view of the organ itself.

Robert Mordkin, MD, FACS and Andrew Joel, MD, FACS of Virginia Hospital Center Physician Group–Urology were early adopters of robotic technology when it was first approved by the FDA in 2004. Since that time, they have performed hundreds of robotic-assisted procedures and routinely use the da Vinci robot for urologic cancer surgeries. In addition, Drs. Mordkin and Joel are instructors for Intuitive Surgical, the makers of the da Vinci® robotic surgical system.
