Inpatient Rehabilitation for Brain Injury

The Inpatient Rehabilitation Center (IRC) at Virginia Hospital Center  implements multidisciplinary nursing, medical and therapy care to meet the individual physical and emotional needs of persons who have experienced a traumatic or non-traumatic injury to the brain.

The program focuses on helping patients recover cognitive and neurological function, increase physical abilities and movement, improve speech and swallowing, and recover skills needed to perform daily activities. Emphasis is placed on providing education and support to patients and their families during the rehab process. Education includes understanding the stages of brain injury recover to better prepare them for discharge. The unit works closely with specialists at Brain Injury Services to connect patients with available community resources/programs.

When deemed necessary, community outings and home evaluations are scheduled to help assess the patient’s readiness to re-enter the community and discharge home.

Specialized Equipment

  • LiteGait (Body-Weight Supported Treadmill Training system) used to address gait performance and increase mobility
  • Bioness® devices and other forms of electrical stimulation for both upper and lower extremities to promote motor recruitment improve mobility/gait function and increased functional use of limbs
  • Assistive communication devices and use of IPad technology to improve communication skills
  • Standing frames

Specialized Treatment

  • Splinting to promote optimal joint alignment, manage tone and reduce risk of contractures
  • Fitting for orthotics when appropriate
  • Advanced pharmacologic and therapeutic interventions to manage spasticity
  • Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS) to evaluate and assist with treatment of swallowing disorders
  • Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES)
  • Community outings
  • Home evaluations
  • Mirror therapy
  • Memory aides

Use of equipment and treatment will be based on set criteria and doctors orders.

Referral & Admissions

Our admissions team will meet with prospective patients, gather necessary medical data and secure medical acceptance from the physiatrists on staff.

    There is a daily parking fee payable upon exiting the garage.

    Patient/Visitor parking passes and multi-day passes may be purchased from the Hospital’s Cashier 8:00 am - 4:00 pm (M-F), located in the main lobby of the Hospital (Zone A, 1625 building).

    After parking, cross the street to the Oncology Entrance on the ground level. Walk to the end of the hallway, turn right and follow the sings to the elevator. Upon exiting the elevator, take the first left into IRC.
