Lung Cancer Care

Find the advanced, coordinated treatment you need for lung cancer at the Lung Cancer Center at Virginia Hospital Center. You'll receive a personalized care plan designed to give you the best possible outcome.

Experienced Team

Expect well-rounded care from experts in many disciplines, including:

  • Pulmonologists (lung doctors)
  • Thoracic (chest and lung) surgeons
  • Medical and radiation oncologists (cancer doctors)
  • Interventional radiologists (doctors who use imaging to guide minimally invasive treatments)

Tests & Imaging

Your care may include tests such as:

  • Biopsy - Takes a small sample of tissue to examine for cancer in a lab; sometimes uses advanced imaging technology to guide the doctor
  • Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) - Slides a tiny camera and light through the mouth and into your lungs while you're sedated (sleepy)
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) - Uses a mildly radioactive tracer to precisely pinpoint areas of cancer
  • Lung cancer screening - Uses a computed tomography (CT) scan and low doses of radiation to check for signs of cancer in current and former smokers before they experience symptoms
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) - Uses magnets and radio waves (not radiation) to see inside your lungs

Treatments

Depending on your type and stage of lung cancer, your doctor may recommend:

  • Clinical trials - Offer new treatment options for patients who meet certain qualifications
  • Chemotherapy - Uses medicine to kill cancer cells
  • Radiation therapy - Includes brachytherapy (places tiny radioactive seeds in your lungs) and CyberKnife radiosurgery
  • Laser bronchoscopy - Uses heat to kill lung cancer cells
  • Lobectomy, including video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomy - Removes one or more lung lobes
