Bio:

Dr. Ugochi Akoma earned her undergraduate degree in Human Biology and Doctor of Medicine at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She then went on to complete her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York.

Secondary to her commitment to caring for the underserved, after graduating residency she served with the national Health Service Corps at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in New York City. During her years there as an Attending Physician, she taught medical students and residents, and was an assistant clinical instructor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Weill Cornell Medical Center – New York Presbyterian Hospital. After caring for a high risk inner city population for four years, she then went on to complete a fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston Salem, North Carolina.

In addition to her professional obligations, she is a dedicated public servant and has held leadership positions in various organizations focusing on women’s health initiatives, education, and the elimination of health care disparities in the U.S. and Africa. Her clinical and research interest include medical and surgical management of high risk pregnancy, prenatal diagnoses, invasive procedures such as chorionic villous sampling (CVS), percutaneous fetal/umbilical blood sampling procedures (PUBS), and amniocentesis, fetal echocardiography, and obstetric simulation training.
