Dr. Chandela is a board certified diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons. He is an endovascular neurosurgeon who serves as Director of Neurovascular Surgery at The Virginia Hospital Center. A fellowship-trained, minimally-invasive neurosurgeon, Dr. Chandela’s unique expertise in cerebrovascular neurosurgery forms the foundation of the Hospital’s neurovascular program. In addition, his practice involves the full scope of general neurosurgery that includes brain tumors and minimally-invasive complex spine surgery. Besides general neurosurgery, his expertise also includes microsurgical and endovascular treatment of aneurysms, AVM, brain bypass for ischemia, treatment of carotid stenosis, tumor embolization, spinal angiography, and interventional revascularization of stroke and intracranial stenosis.
Dr. Chandela is one of a few unique “hybrid-trained” neurosurgeons nationwide trained in both endovascular and traditional open neurosurgical techniques and was the first one in the Northern Virginia area to offer microsurgical and endovascular treatment options for the cerebrovascular disease.
After graduating with honors from medical school at Pennsylvania State University, Dr.Chandela completed his residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center in New York City. Subsequently, he completed a prestigious fellowship in endovascular/cerebrovascular neurosurgery at Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience, known to be one of the busiest cerebrovascular centers in the country. He has special training in brain bypass techniques learned during his time in Utrecht, Netherlands. Dr. Chandela has won various research awards, given talks and authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals. He has also been the physician for Washing DC professional football league dealing with the concussion program.
