Arlington, VA (April 19, 2011) - One of Virginia Hospital Center's most prestigious Centers has been renamed. The Reinsch Pierce Family Center for Breast Health at Virginia Hospital Center has been named for a local family with a rich Arlington heritage that extended its philanthropic support to enhance patient care and education. This special gift from the Reinsch Pierce Family was made in loving memory of Dolores G. Reinsch (1913 - 2010) along with her husband, Emerson G. Reinsch (1903 - 1988) in appreciation for the excellent healthcare they received at the Hospital since its opening in 1944.

"This is a proud moment for our family," said Lola Reinsch. "We made this gift to help women lead strong and healthy lives. Women need to help one another," she said. "My husband, J. Almont Pierce, and I also made this gift to express our family's gratitude for the outstanding healthcare we have received at Virginia Hospital Center," Lola added.

The Center for Breast Health at Virginia Hospital Center was the first in Virginia and Washington, DC to earn a three-year accreditation in breast care from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Center (NAPBC). The Center offers patients with a full range of multidisciplinary services all under one roof, making it more convenient and less time consuming for the patient. The breadth of the advancements made possible by the Reinsch Pierce family gift are transformational for the Center for Breast Health, providing access to innovations and enhanced services for women in our community for years to come. In the coming months, the Reinsch Pierce Family Center for Breast Health will:

  • Invest in new, cutting-edge medical technologies
  • Implement process improvements to enhance and create an even better and more efficient patient experience
  • Expand its research capabilities including participation in clinical trials
  • Begin community educational programming on the need for routine screening and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment
  • Launch a specialized cancer survivorship program for the breast cancer survivor to meet future medical, emotional and financial needs and concerns.

"On behalf of Virginia Hospital Center, I extend our most sincere gratitude to Lola and Al for their generous gift," said Stephanie Akbari, MD, FACS Medical Director of the Reinsch Pierce Family Center for Breast Health at Virginia Hospital Center. "We are honored to be the recipient of their steadfast support which will bring a source of hope and healing for the patients we care for today and in the future.

Virginia Hospital Center's tradition of philanthropy is growing to welcome innovative and inspiring ways to support the Hospital. Donor support has enabled the Hospital to become the 342-bed, state-of-the-art medical facility it is today. The generous support and commitment shown from philanthropic communities will continue to help transform Virginia Hospital Center into the future.
