Arlington, VA (July 22, 2010) - In recognition of the exemplary healthcare provided by John Beckwith, PT, CLT-LANA of the Outpatient Rehabilitation Department at Virginia Hospital Center, an anonymous donor has established the John Beckwith Lymphedema Fund.

The John Beckwith Lymphedema Fund will support the professional development of full- time physical therapists focused on the treatment of lymphedema. The Fund will also support clinical care and treatment of lymphedema.

"We are most grateful to this donor for creating this unique fund to support the professional development opportunities and clinical needs of our physical therapy staff and for her commitment to helping patients with lymphedema, said Steven A. Rubloff, President of the Virginia Hospital Center Foundation. "We are thrilled that the donor has chosen to recognize the outstanding care provided by John Beckwith by naming the Fund in his honor. John and his colleagues symbolize Virginia Hospital Center's commitment to healthcare excellence."

The donor, who has received treatment for chronic healthcare needs for the past ten years states, "John Beckwith is the gold standard for the physical therapy profession."

Lymphedema refers to swelling that generally occurs in one arm or leg. Lymphedema is caused by an impaired lymphatic transport system, which is an important part of the immune and circulatory systems. The impairment prevents lymph fluid from draining well, and as the fluid builds up, the swelling continues.
