Arlington, VA (November 14, 2017)— Virginia Hospital Center was recently awarded the 2017 Outstanding Achievement Award by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons. The Hospital is one of a select group of only 16 US-accredited cancer programs to receive this national honor, doing so for the fourth consecutive time.

The Outstanding Achievement Award recognizes cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. Virginia Hospital Center’s cancer program was evaluated on 34 standards within five activity areas: program management, clinical services, continuum of care services, patient outcomes and data quality. Programs are further evaluated on seven commendation standards. Award recipients must have received commendation ratings in all seven standards, in addition to receiving a compliance rating for each of the 27 remaining cancer program standards. The Hospital has now earned the CoC’s Outstanding Achievement Award for four consecutive survey cycles: 2008, 2011, 2014 and 2017.

The award encourages cancer programs to raise the bar on quality cancer care, with the ultimate goal of increasing awareness about high-quality, patient-centered care. In addition, the award is intended to:

    • Recognize those cancer programs that achieve excellence meeting the CoC standards
    • Motivate other cancer programs to work toward improving their level of quality cancer care
    • Facilitate dialogue between award recipients and health care professionals at other cancer facilities for the purpose of sharing best practices
    • Encourage honorees to serve as quality care resources to other cancer programs

“All of us at Virginia Hospital Center are proud to receive such a prestigious award that demonstrates our personalized and quality-driven approach to caring for our cancer patients,” said James B. Cole, President and Chief Executive Officer. “Our standards of care are verified by a respected and reputable national organization and demonstrate adherence to the highest performance measures. Furthermore, we continue to achieve this level of excellence time after time. It is a direct result of the compassion and commitment of our dedicated team of cancer care specialists.”
