Renowned Virginia Hospital Center Orthopedic Surgeon Receives Mayo Clinic Distinguished Alumni Award

Arlington, VA (November 13, 2017)Robert P. Nirschl, MD, MS, a long-time orthopedic surgeon at Virginia Hospital Center and international pioneer in the field of orthopedic medicine, received the 2017 Mayo Clinic Distinguished Alumni Award. The Mayo Clinic Board of Trustees gives the award annually to acknowledge the exceptional contributions of Mayo alumni to the field of medicine, including medical practice, research, education and administration. Dr. Nirschl completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in 1963.

More than 26 years ago, he established the Nirschl Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at Virginia Hospital Center, where he has trained and directly influenced hundreds of orthopedic surgeons.

“As founder and director of the Nirschl Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship Program, and throughout his tenure at Virginia Hospital Center, Dr. Nirschl has made significant contributions to orthopedic medicine and trained many of the top physicians in the field,” says James B. Cole, President and Chief Executive Officer, Virginia Hospital Center. “Receiving the Mayo Clinic Distinguished Alumni Award is a great honor, and all of us at Virginia Hospital Center congratulate him on this outstanding achievement.”

Dr. Nirschl is founder of the Nirschl Orthopedic Center for Sports Medicine and Joint Reconstruction in Arlington, and the founding medical director of the Virginia Sports Medicine Institute. He is an associate clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC, and the original faculty director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship for the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD.

Dr. Nirschl is widely recognized as an expert in epicondylitis, or tennis elbow. During his 50-year career, he has been instrumental in the initial recognition, treatment and investigation into the pathophysiology of this condition. In 1981, he became a founding member of the U.S. Tennis Association’s Sports Science Committee, and in 1982, he was appointed orthopedic consultant to the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sport.

Dr. Nirschl has received numerous awards including a Distinguished Lifetime Career Award from the Virginia Orthopedic Society and an Outstanding Service Award from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He is a prolific author and speaker on orthopedic and sports medicine topics around the world.
