What information is available on the Patient Portal?

  • Your Hospital stay summary, otherwise called Continuity of Care Document (described below)
  • Radiology Reports
  • Lab Results
  • Useful links such as Pay Hospital Bill, Medline Plus Health Library, and Find a Doctor

What information is NOT available on the portal?

The Patient Portal will not contain the following information:

  • Certain medical information, such as mental health or sensitive lab results that require special authorization and are only available through the Health Information Management (HIM) Records department.
  • Radiology images. If you need actual images rather than text results, contact the Radiology Film Library at 703.558.6329.

  • Information from your doctor’s office visits. If you are a patient of one of the doctors with the Virginia Hospital Center Physician Group practices, you can access your office visit information on the VHC Physician Group Portal. If you have questions regarding the Physician Group Portal, please contact your physician’s office. For general questions, please call 703.717.7100, Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. How do I sign up for the patient portal?

Patients must request access in person during the registration process so staff can verify identity and protect health information.
When you check-in with a Registration Clerk for a new hospital visit, you will be asked for your current email address and if you would like a Patient Portal account. If you have provided your email address and choose to have a Patient Portal account, you will be sent an email message with instructions to create your account.

Why do you need my email address?

An email address is required to set up your Patient Portal account. You will receive email notifications when your account is available, if you receive a secure message, or if the password is changed in your account.
*Virginia Hospital Center will not sell or distribute your email address to third party companies.

What is a validation code and where do I find it?

A validation code is a unique code that you will use when you set up your Patient Portal account online. It will be a combination of your date of birth (MMDD) and the last 6 digits of your Medical Record Number (MRN) in this format: MMDDXXXXXX.
(Refer to your Patient Rights and Responsibilities form provided during the registration process for your MRN.)

What if I lose my validation code?

Fill out the online request help form at virginiahospitalcenter.com/portalhelp or call 703.717.7800 and request a new validation code. You will only be able to receive the validation code if we can verify your identity and you have a current active email address in the system already.

How long does it take for information to be available on the Patient Portal?

In general, documents such as discharge instructions and the Continuity of Care (or Hospital stay summary) document will be available shortly after hospital discharge. From the time lab or radiology tests are resulted, it takes approximately 72 hours for most results to display in the Patient Portal. Remember, some lab tests take several days or weeks to result.

What is the Continuity of Care Document?

The Continuity of Care Document is one of many documents on the Patient Portal designed to communicate the most critical pieces of information from your hospital admission when transitioning out of Virginia Hospital Center. This document includes a summary of your admission along with lab results, a problem list, discharge instructions and your medication list.
