More Rooms, Great Care for Our NICU Babies

A major gift from Frank Sands, Sr. and his children has helped fund improvements to and expansion of The Marjorie Sands Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Opening of the new NICU wing on August 11, 2016
Present for the Grand Opening of the new NICU wing on August 11, 2016 were: (top row, 3rd from left) Brian Stone, MD, MBA, Children’s National neonatologist, Medical Director of the NICU, Virginia Hospital Center; Dr. Bear; and (top row, far right) James B. Cole, President & CEO, Virginia Hospital Center, with the Sands family.

Virginia Hospital Center has added four suites to The Marjorie Sands Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), expanding our capacity to serve newborns and their moms. Our redesigned unit can now accommodate seven sets of twins and two sets of triplets—which happens more often than you would think. A new family consultation room offers a private setting where doctors and family members can meet to discuss the needs of their babies

Like all patients at Virginia Hospital Center, NICU babies have private rooms, allowing parents to bond with their baby in a peaceful environment free of unnecessary stimulation to promote their growth and development. All rooms are equipped with a sleep chair, personal breast pump, refrigerator for storing breast milk and waterless milk warmer.

To make the transition to caring for their baby at home easier, parents can stay in our new “Going Home” rooms, which have an adult bed and private bathroom. This helps parents get used to providing 24-hour care for their baby and supports breastfeeding around the clock.
