Former Nuclear Engineer Brings Years of Industry Experience to New Position

Arlington, VA (March 20, 2013) – Virginia Hospital Center, a leading comprehensive healthcare facility in the Washington Metropolitan area, today announced the appointment of Chief of Medical Imaging Dr. Russell McWey to his new role as Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Virginia Hospital Center. In this role, Dr. McWey will be responsible for all information technology and electronics including clinical, financial, and communication systems in the hospital.

“Due to Dr. McWey’s impressive background in electrical engineering and his longtime relationship with Virginia Hospital Center, we are excited to have him step into his new position as Chief Information Officer,” said James Cole, President and Chief Executive Officer, Virginia Hospital Center. “Dr. McWey brings years of experience to the position and we are confident he will excel in leading the technologically driven aspects of our organization.”

In his new role, Dr. McWey will join the Hospital’s Executive team and participate in formulating strategic goals and plans for the organization. As CIO, Dr. McWey will be responsible for the management and implementation of useful technology to increase accessibility to information and to integrate and manage hospital information systems.

Dr. Russell McWey has been a member of the Virginia Hospital Center medical staff for 25 years. As Chief of Medical Imaging, McWey was responsible for the x-ray, ultrasound, MRI, and nuclear imaging departments at the hospital. He facilitated the conversion of the department to a total digital imaging capability. Dr. McWey, who is Board Certified in Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic Radiology with added qualifications in Vascular & Interventional Radiology, serves as the Radiation Safety Officer and on the hospital's Radiation Safety Committee. Dr. McWey had previously served as the Hospital’s Chief Medical Information Officer. He is a member of the Hospital Board's Information Technology Oversight Committee, and is also a member of the Hospital Board of Directors.

“I am very excited to be taking on my new role of Chief Information Officer at Virginia Hospital Center,” said Dr. McWey. “It was an unexpected opportunity but one that I was happy to pursue. I have been in clinical medicine for over 25 years and this position will allow me to utilize my original training as an electrical engineer and employ my skill sets from that education.”

Dr. McWey has degrees in electrical engineering from Villanova University and the US Navy Postgraduate School and served in the U.S. Naval submarine service as a nuclear engineer and line officer prior to attending medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C. Dr. McWey also served as Chef Resident in Radiology at the Medical University of South Carolina in 1986-87 prior to his arrival at the hospital.
