Arlington, VA: December 17, 2019 – Virginia Hospital Center (VHC), a community-based hospital providing medical services to the Washington, DC metropolitan area for 75 years, announced that it has been named a top teaching hospital by The Leapfrog Group, an independent hospital watchdog organization. This marks the fourteenth time VHC has been recognized by the Leapfrog Group. The Leapfrog Top Hospital awards are widely accepted as one of the most competitive honors American hospitals can receive.

“We are honored to once again be recognized as one of the top hospitals in our nation,” said James B. Cole, President & CEO of Virginia Hospital Center. “An award that places our hospital among the top 118 hospitals in the country is a direct reflection of the dedication and hard work of our invaluable team that provides us with the ability to flourish. As we embark on another year of caring for our patients and community, we are incredibly pleased to be acknowledged for attending to every patient’s individual needs; something we have, and always will, strive to do.”

In addition to receiving the Top Teaching Hospital Award, Virginia hospital Center has also recently received its 15th consecutive “A” Hospital Safety Grade from the Leapfrog Group.

Virginia Hospital Center was one of only 56 Hospitals in the nation that received a Top Teaching distinction:

  • 7 Top Children’s hospitals
  • 37 Top General Hospitals
  • 18 Top Rural Hospitals
  • 56 Top Teaching Hospitals

Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, practices for safer surgery, maternity care, and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication errors. The rigorous standards are defined in each year’s Top Hospital Methodology.

“We are pleased to recognize Virginia Hospital Center as a 2019 Leapfrog Top Hospital,” said Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “This demonstrates extraordinary dedication to patients and to the Arlington community. We congratulate the board, staff and clinicians whose efforts made this honor possible and know they share pride in this achievement.”

To qualify for the Top Hospitals distinction, hospitals must rank top among peers in the 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance on the highest known standards for quality and patient safety, and achieve top performance in its category.
