Dena Carey Recognized for Continuous Improvements in Patient Safety and Advocacy

Arlington, VA: June 17, 2019 – Virginia Hospital Center is proud to announce our indomitable patient advocate, Dena Carey, BSN, BS, RN, has been chosen for the Washington Business Journal’s 2019 40 Under 40 Award. Dena is the AVP, Women & Infant Health, and was recently the Patient Care Director of the Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

A proactive motivator, she applied passion and drive to change the landscape of neonatal care. Her unique ability to balance a commitment to excellence with practical business knowledge has elevated the NICU’s status and improved clinical quality, patient experience, safety and outcomes for newborns and families throughout the Washington, DC, region.

“Dena’s made a remarkable impact in a short time,” says Melody Dickerson, CNO. “She embraces change and is a role model for holistic care that envelops the family unit. She quickly translates the latest evidence-based research into practice improvements for our NICU babies. Her strong record of innovation, outstanding leadership and community involvement have not only raised Virginia Hospital Center’s ability to deliver ideal care to our NICU patients, but also fostered awareness and involvement outside our hospital walls.”

Washington Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 award honors the region’s top young business leaders who excel in their industry. With nearly 400 submissions this year, only nominees that are innovative, involved and industrious are considered for the Journal’s most competitive awards program. Dena is the first Patient Care Director from Virginia Hospital Center to receive this award.

Dena has been with Virginia Hospital Center for over six years and during that time has elevated the NICU from Level II to Level III to provide a higher-level of care to sicker, younger babies, created the NICU Parent Advisory Council (PAC) to give families a voice and improve patient care, and developed the Book Buddies Program to improve language skills in premature infants. We feel so lucky to have Dena Carey as a member of our family here at Virginia Hospital Center and are proud to see her hard work recognized with the Washington Business Journal’s 2019 40 Under 40 Award.
