Arlington, VA (December 07, 2016) – For the second year in a row, Virginia Hospital Center was named one of the country’s Top Hospitals by The Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit hospital watchdog organization. Widely acknowledged as one of the most prestigious distinctions a hospital can receive in the United States, the recognition showcases Virginia Hospital Center’s commitment to patient safety and quality.
“Virginia Hospital Center is honored to be one of just 115 hospitals nationwide to receive this elite award, and the only hospital to be named in the teaching category in the metropolitan Washington region,” said James B. Cole, President and CEO. “Earning Leapfrog recognition for two consecutive years is a significant achievement and substantiates our efforts to provide the highest quality care to our patients in the safest environment possible.”
The selection of Top Hospitals is based on the results of the 2016 Leapfrog Hospital Survey. Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, maternity care, and a hospital’s ability to prevent medication errors. The rigorous standards are defined in each year’s Top Hospital Methodology.
Additionally, hospitals eligible to receive a Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade must earn an A and rate as very efficient in a number of utilization metrics. Virginia Hospital Center has received an A from The Leapfrog Group eight times in a row since 2012.
“Being acknowledged as a Top Hospital is an incredible feat achieved by less than three percent of hospitals nationwide,” said Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “With this honor, Virginia Hospital Center has established its commitment to safer and higher quality care. Providing this level of care to patients requires hard work and dedication from every team member. I congratulate the board, staff and clinicians, whose efforts made this honor possible.”
