From adding capacity to providing the very latest in advanced medical care, Virginia Hospital Center has continued to transform itself to meet the needs of our patients. Our planned expansion will enhance our ability to provide world-class patient care for our growing community."

Virginia Hospital Center Today

Virginia Hospital Center and the Arlington community share a proud history, going back to 1935 when community members purchased a dairy farm as the site for a new hospital. Today, when Arlington families need advanced, high-quality healthcare, they come to Virginia Hospital Center.

  • Every year, we serve more than 115,000 Arlington residents.
  • In 2017, 75% of Arlingtonians who needed inpatient care received it at Virginia Hospital Center.
  • 80% of Arlingtonians chose to deliver their babies here.

To ensure we can continue to provide healthcare at the highest possible level, we are proposing our first major expansion since 2004.

The Need for Expansion

The increase in admissions and visits is just one reason we need to expand.

  • Nationwide, there is a significant shift toward more outpatient services.
  • Our expansion will create a new Outpatient Pavilion, bringing outpatient services together in a single location and making it more convenient for patients and families to access the care they need.
  • With the population of Arlington County projected to rise by 30% over the next 15 years, this is the right time for an expansion.

In the last 14 years, our community’s need for healthcare services has increased dramatically. Today, Virginia Hospital Center has:
39% More Patient Admissions
39% More Births
47% More Behavioral Health Admissions
56% More Emergency Department Visits
71% More Outpatient Procedures

Benefits for You and Your Family

By consolidating outpatient services in the new Pavilion, we will:

  • Open space on the main campus for more inpatient beds for cancer, cardiac and stroke patients.
  • Provide critically needed inpatient capacity for behavioral health services (psychiatric and addiction treatment).
  • Expand our Emergency Department to be able to treat more patients and reduce wait times.
  • Add much-needed parking spaces — both above and below ground.
  • Create a 1.3-acre welcome oasis of open green space as part of the new 5.5-acre parcel.
  • Reduce traffic flow on community streets with the construction of an access road on the Hospital campus, to make it easier to park your car and get to your appointment on time.

The new Outpatient Pavilion provides direct, easy access from parking to treatment areas. Bright, open spaces with natural light enhance patient comfort.
