Gastrointestinal Cancers
Tumors of the gastrointestinal tract include esophageal, stomach, small bowel and colorectal cancers. Colorectal cancers are the most common, oncologic surgical resection remains the most critical step in order to achieve long term survival and cure. Cure can sometimes be achieved if certain tumors have spread to the liver or other organs (stage IV).
At Surgical Associates a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers is standard. We discuss GI tumors in our multidisciplinary GI tumor board, in order to have the best treatment plan for an individual patient. We also have extensive experience and subspecialty training in minimally invasive resection (laparoscopy) of tumors whenever it is feasible.
