Centers of Excellence
Virginia Hospital Center is home to fourteen Centers of Excellence: Bariatric Surgery; Cardiology & Cardiovascular Surgery; Emergency Services; Inpatient Diabetes; Inpatient Rehabilitation; Oncology; Palliative Care; Primary Stroke/ Neuroscience; The Reinsch Pierce Family Center for Breast Health; The Hitt Family Center for Radiation Oncology; Total Joint Replacement/ Orthopedics; Urology; Women & Infant Health; and Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center. A “Center of Excellence” means that a facility is excelling in a broad range of areas that impact clinical care, from staffing to technology and facilities, from patient outcomes to patient safety.
Many of our Centers of Excellence have earned national accreditations and third-party certifications of excellence attesting to the sophistication and quality of Virginia Hospital Center's medical and surgical services. Each Center of Excellence offers comprehensive care and is staffed by a team of skilled physicians, nurses and other healthcare practitioners with specialty training in their medical and/or surgical specialty. Together, Virginia Hospital Center’s multi-disciplinary Centers of Excellence mean that the Hospital is committed to providing the best care available in our region.
Center of Excellence Accreditations
Bariatric Surgery: The American College of Surgeons granted Virginia Hospital Center "Full Approval" and is officially recognized as an "American College of Surgeons Level 1 Accredited Bariatric Center."
Emergency Services: Virginia Hospital Center has been recognized as an Emergency Center of Excellence by Emergency Excellence – designation is based on the results of over 100 key performance indicators linked to seven Pillars of Excellence (Safety, Satisfaction, Space, Staff, Support, Systems and Solvency).
Oncology: The Commission on Cancer (CoC) has confirmed that our CoC-accredited cancer program is now a CoC Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA) recipient.
Palliative Care: Achieved Joint Commission certification for advanced Palliative Care.This 2-year certification is bestowed on organizations that have achieved a standard of care that reflects continuous safe, high-quality care, services and treatment.
Primary Stroke/ Neuroscience: Earning the Gold Seal of Approval™ from The Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers, a certification that reflects Virginia Hospital Center's record of—and commitment to—providing the time-sensitive care paramount to ensuring stoke patients the best chance of recovery
The Reinsch Pierce Family Center for Breast Health: Being designated the first nationally-accredited breast health center in the State of Virginia and Washington, D.C., a recognition bestowed on the Hospital by the American College of Surgeons' National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) after an extensive and rigorous review process
Total Joint Replacement/ Orthopedics: Achieving the Gold Seal of Approval™ from The Joint Commission for Total Joint Replacement (Hip and Knee), indicating the Hospital's excellence in patient pre-operative education, post-operative pain management, infection control and other measures
Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center: Received the prestigious UHMS Clinical Hyperbaric Facility Accreditation. Of the approximately one thousand hyperbaric centers currently in operation in the United States, less than 10% are accredited by the UHMS.
