Bio:

Dr. Nirschl is a graduate of the Medical College of Wisconsin (Marquette University) and received his orthopaedic surgery training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He holds a Master's Degree in orthopaedic surgery from the University of Minnesota. In the 1970s, his research of sports techniques sparked new treatments in the area of tendon injuries. Dr. Nirschl's approach to the care of injuries in the elbow, shoulder, and knee are published in multiple medical journals and are internationally recognized. The Nirschl's operative procedures for elbow tendinosis (tennis and golfer's elbow) as well as his classification of pain phases and microscopic evaluation of tendon failed healing is utilized by physicians' worldwide. His research on shoulder rotator cuff tendon injuries cautioned against excessive surgical acromial bone resection in addition to refining the classification of partial thickness rotator cuff tendon tears. Dr. Nirschl's research in knee and shoulder arthritis has better defined the indications and value of arthroscopic surgical approaches vs. joint replacement. Dr. Nirschl has been invited to speak as visiting professor to multiple U.S. medical centers and has presented his research at medical meetings in eight foreign countries. He is the founding partner of NOC and the founding director of the Nirschl Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship program. Dr. Nirschl is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and serves as the Associate Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Georgetown University School of Medicine. He served on the Board of Councilors for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and as President of the Virginia Orthopaedic Society and the Arlington County Medical Society. 

Dr. Nirschl was one of the founding members of the United States Tennis Association Sports Science Committee and served as an Orthopaedic Surgery Consultant to the President's council on Physical Fitness and Sports during President Reagan's Administration. Dr. Nirschl's biography is profiled in Marquis Who's Who in "Medicine," in "America" and in the "World." He was as well profiled in Sports Illustrated and appeared on Good Morning America, ABC N.Y. with Charles Gibson. Dr. Nirschl has been recognized by his peers as one of the areas "Top Doctors" for years including 2011 and 2012 in Northern Virginia Magazine and listed in top doctors in America in 2012 by the consumer's research council of America. Dr. Nirschl has received The Lifetime Career Award from the Virginia Orthopedic Society, The Wellborn Award for community service from the Arlington County Medical Society, and The Achievement Award from The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He holds four U.S. Patents.
