| Bio: | Dr. Mayes graduated medical school at the University of Chicago in 1979. He completed residency training at the University of Illinois/Cook County Hospital in Chicago in 1986. During that time he did advanced immunology research at Scripps Research Institute in LaJolla, California. Dr. Mayes did his fellowship training in transplantation surgery, graduating in 1988. This included kidney, pancreas and liver transplantation, including advanced Hepatobiliary surgery.
Subsequently, Dr. Mayes has served on the faculty at Case Western Reserve University, Ohio State University adjunct with the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and as a clinical associate professor at the University of South Florida. Dr. Mayes served as director of Liver Transplantation at the LifeLink Healthcare Institute. He has authored over 40 articles and several book chapters on transplantation, biliary surgery, portal hypertension and infectious diseases. Dr. Mayes has performed or participated in nearly a thousand transplant procedures in critically ill patients with diabetes, kidney failure or liver failure. In addition he has performed several thousand non-transplant general surgical procedures in elective, non emergent settings. He is fully certified by the American Board of Surgery in all aspects of general surgery. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, Society of Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, Central Surgical Society, Arlington Medical Society and several other national groups.
Current surgical interest and expertise in laparoscopic surgery includes hernia, spleen, gallbladder, adrenal gland, appendix and bowel. He has extensive surgical expertise in liver, stomach, colon, pancreas, thyroid, breast diseases, and complex critical surgical illness.
Dr. Mayes is married to Janet and has twin boys. His spare time is spent in woodworking and playing saxophone.

In order to receive accreditation, Dr. J.R. Salameh of Virginia Surgical Associates and Medical Director of the Bariatric Surgery Center, along with his partner, Dr. James T. Mayes, led a multidisciplinary team through a year long process to obtain accreditation. An on-site verification was conducted by an experienced bariatric surgeon, who reviews the Center’s structure, process, and quality of data using the current ACS Bariatric Surgery Center Network Accreditation Program Manual as a guideline in conducting the survey.
