Matthew M. Buchanan, MD is a Board Certified, fellowship-trained Orthopaedic Surgeon who specializes in the foot and ankle. Dr. Buchanan is from Vail, Colorado where he was Chief of Surgery at St. Anthony’s Summit Medical Center.
Dr. Buchanan is an active teacher and lecturer to Combined Army and Navy Orthopaedic Residency Programs, and was recently appointed as a clinical professor at Georgetown University. He has authored multiple book chapters on foot and ankle topics including Pes Planus (flatfoot), Ankle Arthroscopy (minimally invasive ankle surgery) and Osteochondral Lesions of the Talus (ankle cartilage defects). His research papers have been published in leading medical journals and have analyzed the optimum technique to treat traumatic foot injuries and the effects of smoking on bone fusion. He currently serves on the editorial board for http://www.footeducation.com, an educational patient website peer-reviewed by orthopaedic surgeons with subspecialty training in foot and ankle surgery.
Current clinical interests include minimizing the recovery time associated with foot and ankle surgery, bunions/hammertoes and arthritis/joint regeneration. He is one of a select group of Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeons who have received certification to perform all four Total Ankle Replacements currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
Dr. Buchanan grew up in St. Louis Missouri and received his B.S. at Duke University. He attended medical school at Ohio State University receiving dual honors in Orthopaedic and General Surgery. He received the Department of Surgery Jonasson Prize for “Exceptional Performance and Dedication to Surgery.” Dr. Buchanan served as Chief Resident at West Virginia University’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery prior to his prestigious fellowship at the Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Center in Columbus, Ohio. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.
An active sports enthusiast, Dr. Buchanan understands a patient’s desire for a quick recovery. He organized and completed a 3300-mile self-supported cross-country bicycle ride from Jacksonville, FL to San Diego, CA to support Children’s Miracle Network. He successfully completed the 24-hours of Snowshoe, WV mountain bike race for 5 years in a row. An accomplished whitewater kayaker, he has navigated multiple Class V rivers including the Gauley in West Virginia, Youghiogheny in Maryland and the Pacuare in Costa Rica. He is married and is raising his son in Arlington, Virginia.
