James B. Cole

President & Chief Executive Officer

For more than 20 years, James Cole has presided over Virginia Hospital Center as President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). During his tenure he has led the Hospital’s transformation from a small community facility to an award-winning medical center, nationally recognized for clinical excellence and outstanding patient care.

Jim has decisively positioned Virginia Hospital Center as an industry leader. Under his direction, the Hospital has achieved nationwide standing as a high-value provider with a superlative commitment to organizational performance, quality and patient satisfaction. He has led the Hospital to recognition as one of America’s 100 Top Hospitals® three years in a row, and one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals® two years in a row. Both designations come from Truven Health Analytics, which measures quality, safety and financial metrics for hospitals across the country.

In addition, Jim has championed the Hospital’s growth and strong stewardship of financial resources. His oversight led to a recent bond upgrade from the global financial firm Fitch, which puts the Hospital among an elite group of healthcare organizations nationwide. Likewise, the Hospital consistently exceeds Medicare Value-Based Purchasing goals and Meaningful Use standards. Its strong market share allows it to remain a successful, not-for-profit, stand-alone institution in an era of consolidation.

This resolute leadership and commitment to excellence have earned Jim the admiration and respect of his employees, patients and community. In 2013, the Washington Business Journal named him one of the area’s 50 Most Admired CEOs. He was among just five CEOs nominated in the healthcare category. And in 2014, Jim was elected to the Arlington Business Hall of Fame.

Jim is chairman of the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association Board, an alliance of health delivery systems committed to improving the health status of the community. He also has served on the American Hospital Association Regional Policy Board and the Northern Virginia Hospital Alliance Board. His prior community involvement has included serving on the Boards of CrisisLink, the Arlington Free Clinic and CrisisLink International.

He received his BA from the University of Virginia in 1970, a Masters of Urban Planning from the University of Washington in 1972 and a Masters of Health Administration from Georgia State University in 1976.
