John R. Garrett, MD, FACS, is Chief of Cardiac, Vascular and Thoracic Surgery at Virginia Hospital Center. He is also Director of Physician Operations and Chairman of the Hospital’s Board of Directors.
Since founding the cardiovascular surgery program in 1989, Dr. Garrett has led its transformation into a Cardiovascular and Thoracic Center of Excellence. Today, it is the fastest-growing cardiac surgery program in the Washington, DC area, with combined quality data that exceeds national benchmarks for length-of-stay, mortality, readmission and patient satisfaction. These metrics, coupled with Dr. Garrett’s consummate leadership, contributed to Virginia Hospital Center’s recognition as one of America’s 100 Top Hospitals® (two years in a row) and one of the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals® in the country. The designations come from Truven Health Analytics, which evaluates healthcare organizations worldwide.
Dr. Garrett is a nationally renowned cardiac and thoracic surgeon who brings a practical working knowledge to his role as Board Chairman. He assumed the position in 2000. Since then, his strategic oversight and vision for excellence have helped the Hospital achieve market dominance and become an industry leader in clinical quality, patient experience and efficiency.
Despite the formidable challenges facing independent hospitals today, Dr. Garrett and the Board have built a solid base in every area. Virginia Hospital Center was the Washington area’s first NAPBC-accredited breast cancer program, a Joint Commission Top Performer on Key Quality Metrics, among the top five percent nationally to consistently exceed Medicare’s Value-Based Purchasing goals, and a Leapfrog Group Grade A hospital for safety.

Dr. Garrett earned a BS in Biology from Emory University and a Masters in Physiology and Biophysics from the University of Alabama. After receiving his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine, he completed his residency in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston.
He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the Cooley Hands Society, the Denton A. Cooley Cardiovascular Surgical Society, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the Arlington County Medical Society.
