Established in 2003 under the ongoing leadership of Russell McWey, MD, Advanced Vein Care at Virginia Hospital Center is a comprehensive, multi-specialty center dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease (varicose veins). Interventional radiologists (IR physicians), physician assistants, nurses, licensed vascular radiological technologists and support staff work closely to provide innovative treatment options for virtually all vein problems, both medical and aesthetic. Common disorders diagnosed and treated at Advanced Vein Care at Virginia Hospital Center include venous insufficiency leading to leg pain and fatigue, varicose veins, spider veins, venous stasis ulcers, leg wounds, and vascular malformations.

Varicose veins are veins that become enlarged and twisted, resulting in the pooling of blood in the legs due to the veins' failure to properly circulate the blood back toward the heart. Varicose veins are most common in the calf and thigh and - in severe cases - can rupture or form open sores called ulcers. Smaller spider veins appear as short fine lines, "starburst" clusters or a web-like maze and often have a red or bluish color. They are most common on the thigh, ankle and feet. Even if you do not have unsightly varicose veins but experience leg pain, fatigue, heaviness, or burning, you may have venous insufficiency and could benefit from services offered by Advanced Vein Care at Virginia Hospital Center.
