What Doctors Say about Virginia Hospital Center

HealthReach, Fall 2013 | Page 4

Some national hospital rankings are based on subjective measures, such as opinions. Each year Truven Health Analytics selects the 100 Top Hospitals® in America based completely on objective, public data. Out of 3,000 hospitals reviewed nationally, Virginia Hospital Center was named one of Truven’s 100 Top Hospitals in 2013.

Physicians are pivotal to achieving the level of excellence for being recognized as a 100 Top Hospital. Here are a few reasons why physicians say they choose to practice at Virginia Hospital Center:

EVIDENCE-BASED MEDICINE

Family practitioner Nancy Selim, DO, a member of the Virginia Hospital Center Physician Group, joined the Hospital’s medical staff within the last year after moving here from the West Coast. Dr. Selim chose Virginia Hospital Center because she “wanted to work with healthcare professionals providing the best care for patients, using evidence-based medicine. Evidence-based medicine means using the proper treatments based on research and statistics in order to predict if a treatment will do more good than harm.”

A COLLEGIAL MEDICAL STAFF

When Paula Bergamini, MD, internist, rotated through Virginia Hospital Center during her residency, she was impressed by the collegiality of the medical staff. Since 1995, she has based her practice on the campus of Virginia Hospital Center, which facilitates professional interaction with her colleagues. Over the years, Dr. Bergamini says, the administration has made it a priority to recruit and retain quality physicians. “It’s not like this everywhere,” she says. “Here at Virginia Hospital Center doctors have strong ties with each other and feel they are part of a team in taking care of patients. We naturally want to help each other.”

AN EXCELLENT REPUTATION

Internist Rachel Ngernmaneepothong, MD, a member of the Virginia Hospital Center Physician Group, was attracted to the Hospital’s long history and reputation for providing excellent care to the surrounding community. “The Hospital has been a fixture in the Arlington area since the 1940s, growing and changing with the needs of their patients,” she says. “I wanted to be part of this dynamic organization that quickly recognized and responded to those changing needs while keeping my patients and me up to date on the latest advances in medical care.”

SUPERIOR NURSING CARE

Dr. Bergamini says that the Hospital has an exceptional commitment to providing a positive patient experience. “In particular, my patients who are admitted to Virginia Hospital Center consistently tell me that the nursing care they received is wonderful.”

DEPTH OF MEDICAL SPECIALTIES

The Hospital provides a wide range of services, from heart health to pelvic floor disorders, and breast health to colorectal surgery, all in a single location. Dr. Ngernmaneepothong says, “My patients never have trouble getting in to see the appropriate specialists here. The referral process is always as easy as making a phone call to a colleague or faxing over an order.”

PATIENT-CENTERED CARE

“I’ve worked at other top hospitals on the West Coast and I see the same type of mission and passion for patient care at Virginia Hospital Center,” Dr. Selim says. “It’s not just a job, but a career to provide the best care. This Hospital has a very positive, highenergy group of people meeting the highest standards of care for their patients.”
