Better Wound Healing with Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing 100 percent oxygen under compression to deliver oxygen to wounds and help them heal. It is a proven method for treating certain types of wounds, including those caused by radiation injuries, diabetic foot ulcers and bone infections. It also reduces swelling and helps heal infected skin grafts and flaps, and can improve circulation.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is noninvasive and comfortable. During treatment, patients lie in a large, clear chamber. They can watch TV, listen to music or take a nap. A staff member stays with them at all times.

The Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center at Virginia Hospital Center has achieved the prestigious Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) Clinical Hyperbaric Facility Accreditation, a distinction awarded to less than 10 percent of the hyperbaric centers in the U.S. The Center exceeds national benchmarks with its healing percentage and number of days to healing.

Brian F. McCrary, DO, an expert in hyperbaric medicine and a member of the Virginia Hospital Center Physician Group, has recently been appointed Medical Director of the Center. He leads a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, including podiatrist Rudolph Anderson, DPM; infectious diseases specialist Ali Asad Arastu, MD; and Janice Zima, NP. Dr. Arastu and Ms. Zima are both members of the Virginia Hospital Center Physician Group.

The Center also provides comprehensive wound healing care, including advanced treatments, modalities and dressings to promote healing in the shortest amount of time.
