VIRGINIA HOSPITAL CENTER NAMED ONE OF THE NATION'S 50 TOP CARDIOVASCULAR HOSPITALS
Award Winning Hospital Recognized Nationally for Excellence in Cardiovascular Services and Care by Truven Health Analytics

Arlington, VA (November 15, 2013) – Virginia Hospital Center, a leading healthcare facility in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, today announced that it has been named one of the Nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals by Truven Health Analytics. Virginia Hospital Center is the only hospital in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region to be recognized with this honor.

“What sets Virginia Hospital Center apart is our staff’s commitment and enthusiasm to ‘To Be the Best Hospital,’ said James Cole, President and CEO at Virginia Hospital Center. “That means we focus on excellent quality at the right cost, patient safety and an outstanding patient experience.”

“I applaud and thank our cardiovascular surgeons, cardiologists and staff involved in cardiovascular care. Their dedication to excellence has truly made Virginia Hospital Center a leader in cardiovascular care,” added Cole.

Truven Health Analytics is a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare. The 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals recognized have outperformed their peers in inpatient and extended outcomes, clinical process, efficiency, and cost for the two most common cardiovascular conditions (heart attacks and heart failure) and most common interventions (PCI and CABG).

To ensure fair, objective analysis of a hospital’s performance, Truven Health Analytics uses only public data sources and peer-reviewed methodologies for evaluations.

“This year’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals have delivered excellent care in a time of sweeping change in the healthcare system," said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president for performance improvement and the 100 Top Hospitals® program at Truven Health Analytics. “Their success is a testament to the strong focus by cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, and cardiovascular service administrators and staff on basic care and outcomes.”

If all cardiovascular providers in the U.S. performed at the level of this year's winners:

  • 8,600 additional lives could be saved
  • $1 billion could be saved
  • 3,200 additional bypass and angioplasty patients could be complication-free
